About Us
Though Sigma Phi Epsilon Nationals was founded in 1901, the story of Sigma Phi Epsilon on Duke's campus begins in 1909. Over the past one hundred years, the gentlemen of the NC Gamma chapter have been nothing short of Duke's finest in every aspect of the word. SigEp's follow the ideals of the Balanced Man, striving for excellence in athletics, academics and everything in between. During the late 80s, even the Duke Basketball star Bobby Hurley was a SigEp. SigEp's strength comes from the diversity of its brothers and the brotherhood that they share. A SigEp's four years on campus are only the beginning of their SigEp experience. SigEp Nationals has one of the biggest alumni networks in the country and the chapter's own alumni have gone on to become successful doctors, lawyers, bankers, engineers and military service members following their years in SigEp. The chapter owes much of its success to its alumni, especially in recent years, where generous alumni donations have provided the fraternity with a large screen TV for its common room and a brand new outdoor power generator for the fraternity sound system.
Since 2001, the NC Gamma chapter has been continually improving itself into the chapter that it has become today. In the fall of 2003, SigEp was finally granted a campus "section" and moved into Edens 1B, where it remained until the RGAC reshuffling in 2010. In that same year, SigEp began "Hall Brawl"; a yearly philanthropy event of athletic competition between East Campus dorms. The wide success of Hall Brawl on campus prompted SigEp Nationals to adopt the event as an official SigEp philanthropy event.
Today, SigEp is comprised of brothers who are scholars, athletes and leaders. SigEps have held numerous leadership positions around campus including: Editor and Chief of the Chronicle and President of the Inter-Fraternity Council. SigEp brothers also combine for one of the highest GPAs among IFC Fraternities. Two years ago, SigEp won the Undergraduate IM Basketball Championship, and coming into this year, SigEp is fresh off of an Undergraduate IM Volleyball Championship and a Greek League Soccer Championship from last fall. The scope of SigEp's philanthropy has also expanded in recent years, and SigEp hopes to continue partnering with Habitat for Humanity to give back to the Durham community this upcoming year. After numerous years of SigEp's excellence on campus, we now finds ourselves in our new home on the 1st and 2nd floors of Wannamaker and plan to make the most of the new school year in this new section.
